Library News from the Director

May 4, 2010

Sent to County Courier to publish 5/6.

Are you ready for some trivia?  Come and join us at the Richford Community Quiz Bowl Saturday evening at 7pm in the Town Hall.  There will be 8 different teams competing, representing NOTCH Health Center, The Crossing Restaurant, Library Patrons, Our Lady of the Meadows and Ave Maria, Richford High School Faculty, Richford High School Scholar’s Bowl Team, Hometown Follies, and People’s Plaza.  This brainy battle will test contestants’ knowledge of general facts of all sorts and Vermont and Richford history.  Come for an evening’s entertainment and go home a little richer in knowledge.  There will also be refreshments and a 50/50 raffle.  All of the money raised on Saturday evening will be matched by a donation from Maple Mountain Woodworks, so take advantage of this chance to double your efforts to help the Arvin A. Brown Library meet our fundraising goal of $4,000.  All of the money we raise will be used toward our book and dvd purchases, program fees, or as matching funds for grants which require we show community support.  All the trustees have been working hard to make this a fun evening for everyone.

What’s new on our shelves?  We have recently received a $500 grant from the Ashgate Publishing Company to update and expand the health and wellness section of our collection.  Some of these new titles have arrived and are available for borrowing.  Topics cover heart disease, back pain, stress, bipolar disorder, acne and depression. Some of the titles are young adult titles such as

Teenagers and HIV by Maureen Lyon

When Nothing Matters by Bev Cobain

Mad: How to Deal With Your Anger by James Crist

Fighting Invisible Tigers by Earl Hipp.

We also have 2 cookbooks

Eating For IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) by Heather Van Vorous

The Allergy Cookbook by Cybele Pascal.

More titles will be coming in soon.  Look for these new books on the orange bookcart near the circulation desk.  We thank the Ashgate Publishing Company for awarding us this grant.

We have also received a grant from the Vermont Department of Health to purchase family friendly cookbooks, as well as books that encourage good nutrition and healthy habits for kids.  These titles will be arriving in the month of May.  We are very excited to have these new books available for everyone to borrow. Come on in and check them out – if you don’t see what you are looking for just let us know!
